I decided to create a glossary about the field of pharmacy because I am already working at a pharmacy, and I would like to become a pharmacist. I know there are many words in this field that are complicated and unknown.
You have certainly heard many of these words before, but the question is, do you really know what they mean? Let's find out!
I hope it will help some to expand their vocabulary. :)
Analgesic

Insensibility to pain without loss of consciousness.
Example: The long-used application of cryotherapy (ice) is still supported by numerous studies as very effective treatment in this initial phase.6,7,8,9 Cryotherapy slows the inflammatory process as well as provides an ANALGESIC effect.

Anemia

Anemia is a condition that develops when your blood produces a lower-than-normal amount of healthy red blood cells.
Example: ANEMIA may also occur in cancer patients as a consequence of the disease or as an adverse effect from the chemotherapy treatment they receive.

noun
Insensitivity to pain, especially as artificially induced by the administration of gases or the injection of drugs before surgical operations.
Example: Local ANESTHESIA has the advantage of allowing direct evaluation of the patient's neurologic status without sophisticated monitoring.

Anticoagulant
noun
A substance that is used to prevent and treat blood clots in blood vessels and the heart.
Example: Recently, it has been found that some osteonecrosis patients respond to anticoagulation therapies alone.

Cholesterol
noun
It is a fatty substance that is found in the body tissue and blood of all animals, and which is thought to be part of the cause of heart disease if there is too much of it.
Example: Furthermore, the male group consumed CHOLESTEROL (481mg per day) more than the recommended intake (<300mg per day) by the American Heart Association, which also suggests people with high blood total CHOLESTEROL level (>200 mg dL) should ingest less than 200mg CHOLESTEROL per day.

Colonoscopy

A procedure in which a flexible fiber-optic instrument is inserted through the anus in order to examine the colon.
Example: A COLONOSCOPY in reported some inflammation of the rectum and sigmoid colon. Following this recent admission in August, a repeat COLONOSCOPY revealed active UC in the sigmoid and transverse colon.

The dosage is how to take the medication as prescribed: a specific amount, number, and frequency of doses over a specific period of time.
Example: To achieve equal efficacy to both griseofulvin and terbinafine in children DOSAGE of 100mg day for 4 weeks or 5mg kg per day is required 7.

Atopic dermatitis (eczema) is a condition that causes dry, itchy and inflamed skin.

Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a central nervous system (neurological) disorder in which brain activity becomes abnormal, causing seizures or periods of unusual behavior, sensations and sometimes loss of awareness.
Example: Up to 1% of the general population suffer from active EPILEPSY with 20-50 new cases per 100 000 being diagnosed each year. Approximate annual death rate for EPILEPSY is 2 per 100 000.

Hemoglobin

A red protein responsible for transporting oxygen in the blood of vertebrates. Its molecule comprises four subunits, each containing an iron atom bound to a heme group.
Example: In some cases nitrates are converted to nitrites in human body that react to HEMOGLOBIN in the blood to inhibit oxygen transport.

Hypertension
noun
High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is blood pressure that is higher than normal.
Example: The implications of the factors that affect food choice can be important, such as; afro- Caribbean women in the UK are more likely to suffer from HYPERTENSION and diabetes.

Insulin
noun
A hormone made by the islet cells of the pancreas. Insulin controls the amount of sugar in the blood by moving it into the cells, where it can be used by the body for energy.
Example: These are secreted by the placenta during pregnancy and may also cause increased resistance to INSULIN and so possible hyperglycemia.

Lancet
noun
A lancet is a pointed piece of surgical steel encased in plastic, used to puncture the skin on one's finger (or other body part) to get a blood sample.
Example: It is most commonly used by diabetic patients during blood glucose monitoring.

Lesion
noun
A region in an organ or tissue which has suffered damage through injury or disease, such as a wound, ulcer, abscess, or tumor.
Example: Lesions to particular areas of the brain do for the majority of the time cause specific language deficits.

Narcotics

A drug that relieves pain and induces drowsiness, stupor, or insensibility.

Oral contraception

A pill used to prevent pregnancy. It contains hormones that block the release of eggs from the ovaries.
Example: It is impossible to predict long-term results of this operation due to many factors such as normal tissue slackening, pregnancy, the use of oral contraception, breastfeeding, weight changes, etc.

Osteoporosis

A medical condition in which the bones become brittle and fragile from loss of tissue, typically as a result of hormonal changes, or deficiency of calcium or vitamin D.
Example: Long-standing acidemia therefore contributes to bone demineralization and osteoporosis.

A written direction or order for the preparing and use of a medicine.

Diabetes test strips are an easy way to test your blood sugar, aka your glucose levels.

Therapeutic target
noun
A therapeutic target is a biological molecule, biological pathway, or physio-local response that is associated with a particular disease process and may be inhibited or activated by a therapy in a way that will change the course of the disease in a positive way.
Example: Small-molecule drugs are small enough to enter cells easily, so they are used for targets that are inside cells.
